Roof Replacement When Solar Panels Are Installed

Solar panels cover part of the surface a roofer needs to reach during replacement. The roof covering, panel supports, electrical system and project sequence need to be coordinated before tear-off.

Access to the Roof Beneath the Panels

Replacement normally requires access to the covering and the deck. Panel removal and reinstallation involve the solar system and its electrical connections, so the solar provider and roofing scope need coordination. Do not disconnect or move a panel to investigate a leak.

Roof Attachments and Flashing

Each support connection interrupts the roof surface. The new roofing must join properly to the attachment flashing and the selected mounting system. A new shingle covering around an unchanged failed penetration leaves the water path unresolved.

Sequence and Project Cost

Panel handling, access equipment and work by the solar provider can add project steps and cost. Those items are separate from a basic asphalt replacement scenario. The roof’s condition and material choice still determine the roofing work below the array.

Start With the Roof Condition

Tell us that the roof has solar panels when requesting the inspection so access and project coordination are part of the conversation.
